Chapter 10

“Wake up.” Cold water splashed across Maddock’s face, shocking him back to wakefulness. He had just a moment to grasp the significance of this—I’m alive—before a spike of pain drove through his skull. He blinked away the water that was dribbling into his eyes and then attempted to lever himself into an upright position. The effort was rewarded with a slap that, while not as brutal as the blow that had knocked him senseless, nevertheless flattened him. “Stay down.” The voice did not belong to the man who had assaulted him on the beach, but it held the same brand of menace—doubtless one of his accomplices.

Maddock decided to do as instructed, not that he had much choice in the matter. He lay prone on a carpeted floor, his hands bound behind his back. His shoulders ached and his arms were alternately numb and tingling from restricted circulation. He blinked away the last of his stupor and began taking stock of the situation. He wasn’t on the beach anymore, that much was obvious, but where the hell was he? And where were the others? He decided that getting an answer to that question was worth risking further injury. “What have you done with my friends?”

“Shut up,” snarled his captor. “We’ll be asking the questions.”

“You’re not getting any more answers from me until I know my friends are still alive.” Maddock mentally braced himself for another blow, but none came.

“You are in no position to make any demands.” The man who had struck him squatted down. Maddock couldn’t see his face, but he could see the pistol in the man’s hand. It hovered just a few inches from Maddock’s left eye. “Cooperate and we might let you live.” He laughed and then added, “At least as long as everyone else.” Maddock ignored the ominous declaration, and instead pleaded, “Just tell me if they’re still alive.”

He didn’t expect a direct answer to his request, but figured he might be able to get a better sense of the situation by the guard’s reaction. The kneeling man stood, the gun moving out of Maddock’s field of view. After a moment, Maddock felt himself being lifted off the floor, then he was spun around and deposited in a seated position, his back against a wall. He winced as his bound hands were smashed between his backside and the floor, but he gritted his teeth through the pain and focused his attention on the plushly decorated room to which he had been brought. It took only a glance for him to realize that he was aboard the large yacht which had earlier pursued them across the strait. Bones and Corey were nowhere to be seen but Aycayia lay beside him, unmoving. Her hair covered her face, so he couldn’t tell if she was awake or not. His captor knelt before him, fixing him with a hard stare, then with the swiftness of a striking rattlesnake, backhanded Maddock. The blow rocked his head back and drove him to the edge of consciousness.
